Twisted Metal PS5

Sony has confirmed it's cancelled "some" unannounced games at PlayStation Studios, and according to Jason Schreier of Bloomberg, one of them is the long-rumoured Twisted Metal game from Firesprite. The journalist reports the project was in "early development" and hadn't been greenlit by Sony to go into full production yet, according to a source.

Speculation dating as far back as September 2021 has suggested a new Twisted Metal title is in development, having first started out at Descrution AllStars developer Lucid Games before being handed to UK team Firesprite. Until today's report, it had been a number of years since any new speculative details were shared, but with the game series getting a successful TV adaptation and the go-ahead to produce a second season, it was assumed the video game was still in production. Following the claim the game was still in "early development" until today's cancellation, though, it's unclear how much of that was actually true.

The news comes as Sony cuts 900 employees from its PlayStation division so it can "future ready ourselves to set the business up for what lies ahead". Blood & Truth team London Studio has been shut down in its entirety, and Firesprite has been downsized. Naughty Dog, Insomniac Games, and Guerrilla Games have also been affected by the layoffs.
